
Glossary1G - First Generation, the analogue mobile phone 2G - Second Generation, the digital version of mobile technology 3G - Third Generation, the high speed digitl mobile technology BlueTooth- A wireless connection type, to connect a handset to another handset or a computer. EDGE - An alternative to 3G for GSM coverage high speed data GPRS - General Packet Radio Service - the original mobile high speed data service GPS - Global Positioning System, some handsets have built in functionality to support Satellite Navigation, others may be able to connect via bluetooth or usb to a GPS receiver. GSM - Global System for Mobile Communications Handset - The mobile phone itself HSDPA - High Speed Data Packet Access - more commonly called Mobile Broadband, usually associated with 3G IMEI - International Mobile Equipment Identity, an internaiton identification system for handsets. Networks can use this to block stolen phones. IrDA - Infra-red Data Access, an infra red method of transferring data to and from your mobile, perhaps with a computer. PIN - Personal Identification Number, usually a 4 digit code to secure your phone as a password from unauthorised use. PUK - Pin Unlocking Key, a code to reactivate your phone after multiple incorrect PIN entries. Too many incorrect PUK entries will usually render a mobile inoperable. Roaming - Using your mobile abroad, eg on holiday. SIM - Subscriber Identity Module, as in Sim card USB - Universla Serial Bus, a connection type usually found on computers Wifi - Wireless fidelity, connection to the internet via hotspots. |
